I have a friend who is deaf and I usually work closely with, so I witness and know what he go through on daily basis. the design is based on his description of deafness and his frustrtion of missing some part of the conversation. He can hear the conversation but sometime he still find it difficult to hear the whole thing. This is how I translate his experience, you can see the text but can only just make out what the text says.
